OpenAI Foundation funds initiative to create scientific data for medical AI
The OpenAI Foundation announced Public Data for Health, an initiative to fund the creation of scientific datasets aimed at helping artificial intelligence systems advance biology and medicine. According to MIT Technology Review Brasil, the initial round includes $40 million for a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill program collecting data on new cancer vaccines, as well as support for OpenAdmet, a group that runs competitions to predict drug effects.
The foundation also awarded $500,000 to 1Day Sooner to develop a proposal for assembling regulatory documents, manufacturing strategies and safety data from biotechnology companies that have gone bankrupt. OpenAI says advances in disease prevention and cures will depend on combining more capable models with more observations of the world—in other words, more data.
