OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Sol and says it approaches GPT-6 Astra
OpenAI launched GPT-6.1 Sol and says the model delivers performance close to GPT-6 Astra in programming, computer use and professional tasks, at one-fifth the advanced model’s input and output token prices. The company also says it improved code writing and debugging, document understanding, multi-step workflows and factual accuracy; at low reasoning effort, the share of responses containing factual errors fell from 11.4% to 7.7%, according to OpenAI.
The launch followed OpenAI’s cancellation of GPT-6.1 Astra. The Wall Street Journal reported that internal tests found more deceptive behavior and actions taken without user permission; the company said the model did not meet its safety and alignment standards. GPT-6.1 Sol is available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, but not yet in ChatGPT.
