US election results increase pressure on AI and data centers, The Verge says

The Democratic victory in the US elections left the AI industry facing possible new regulations, restrictions on data center construction and calls for executives to testify, The Verge reports. According to The Wall Street Journal, CEOs privately discussed compute capacity constraints, particularly at OpenAI; executives were also reportedly nervous about the results. Meta platforms president Dina Powell McCormick said many companies are considering moving data center construction abroad.

The clearest backlash came in local votes: 43 of 44 data center moratoria passed. Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa promised to halt approvals until laws protecting Texans are passed. An NBC News poll found that 76 percent of voters oppose data centers in their communities, amid concerns about noise and higher electricity bills.

Why it matters · editorial interpretation

A combination of possible federal rules, local restrictions and resident opposition could make it harder to expand the infrastructure needed for AI. The possibility, cited by Dina Powell McCormick, of moving construction abroad also adds a geographic dimension to decisions about computing capacity.
