Crusoe sells unfinished Wyoming data center project to Google
🎧 Listen to this story
Crusoe confirmed the sale of an unfinished data center project in southeastern Wyoming to Google. Google will take over development and announced plans to invest $17 billion in the campus, without disclosing how much it paid for the project. Crusoe and Tallgrass had initially announced the facility with a goal of eventually reaching 10 gigawatts of power capacity.
The deal was first reported by Bloomberg in June, according to TechCrunch. It highlights the challenges independent data center developers face in delivering large projects on time and within budget, amid difficulties securing equipment and power. Despite the sale, Crusoe is still developing another data center for Google near Amarillo, Texas, and raised a $3.9 billion round in September.
Why it matters · editorial interpretation
The acquisition transfers both execution and the planned $17 billion investment in an unfinished campus to Google, while the purchase price was not disclosed. The case may indicate how difficulty securing equipment and power affects independent developers of large data centers.
