India says it plans to develop a domestic GPU in about 24 months
🎧 Listen to this story
S. Krishnan, secretary of India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, told ETGovernment, in an interview reproduced by Xataka, that the country plans to develop its own GPU in approximately 24 months as part of India Semiconductor Mission 2.0. The effort comes as India still depends on international suppliers for these chips and seeks to create commercial demand for the domestic RISC-V processors SHAKTI and VEGA.
According to Xataka, the country had more than 45,000 GPUs in the IndiaAI program’s shared infrastructure in June 2026, but it has not disclosed the future GPU’s specifications, developers, manufacturing location or launch date. SHAKTI was created by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, while VEGA comes from the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC); both use the open RISC-V architecture.
Why it matters · editorial interpretation
The plan could reduce India’s dependence on international suppliers and create commercial demand for its RISC-V processors, but specifications, developers, manufacturing location and a launch date have not been disclosed. That leaves the project’s feasibility and reach uncertain.
